What Happens on Wednesdays?

Here’s a look at a typical Wednesday at Calvary Lutheran Church.  It’s a fun place to be!

Dinner prep starts in the kitchen at 1:00, and work in the kitchen continues until the last dish is washed, usually around 8:00.

Sharing a meal with friends and family.

Dinner service starts at 4:45 and continues until 6:15. Two sessions of the children’s education classes allow some families to eat early, and some to eat late.

All ages are welcome and celebrated.

All ages are welcome and celebrated. Some weeks we have Milestone Ministries, helping families pass on the faith.

  • Milestones

Milestone Ministry is a way of helping families pass on the Christian faith. It is a way to celebrate events in our every day lives that shape our identity and give us a sense of belonging to the family of Jesus Christ. Milestone’s bring an awareness of God’s presence into the home while also bringing the events of our every day lives into the congregation. Each month, we will be celebrating these sacred and ordinary milestones in conjunction with our Wednesday night service at 6:30*.

And some nights we have special dinner music, as we did last week with Al Spreizer on accordian for our Octoberfest meal:

A 30 minute worship service follows dinner at 6:30, with gathering music by the Praise Band starting at 6:20.  The kids love it when the band plays, “I Get Down, and He Lifts Me Up”:

Great lyrics:

Lavishly our lives are wasted
Humbleness is left untasted
You can’t live your life to please yourself, yeah
That’s a tip from my mistakes
Exactly what it doesn’t take
To win you’ve got to come in last place
To live your life you’ve got to lose it
And all the losers get a crown

CHORUS:
I get down and He lifts me up
I get down and He lifts me up
I get down and He lifts me up
I get down

All I need’s another day
Where I can’t seem to get away
From the many things that drag me down, yeah
I’m sure you’ve had a day like me
Where nothing seems to set you free
From the burdens you can’t carry all alone
In your weakness He is stronger
In Your darkness He shines through
When you’re crying He’s your comfort
When your all alone, He’s carrying you

CHORUS

This valley is so deep
I can barely see the sun
I cry out for mercy, Lord
You lift me up again

Then after all of this, the high school group, confirmation groups, and adult Bible study groups meet.

All in all, Wednesdays are a great place to be at Calvary Lutheran Church.

No Dinner Again This Week!

Snowball fight anyone?

Snowball fight anyone?

Another snow day tomorrow, April 17th!  The forecast is for maybe a foot of snow by tomorrow afternoon in Rapid City.  Today the kitchen crew at Calvary worked hard on getting food ready for the meal tomorrow night.  48 pound cakes have been baked and 200 pounds of roast beef have been roasted.  Then we got the word…no school tomorrow.  Therefore, no Wednesday school, no meal, no worship service at Calvary Lutheran Church either.  No worries!  Into the freezer it went, and we’ll thaw it out for dinner next Wednesday night.  That will be our last meal until September and the kids will be singing in worship.  We hope to see you all there.

The menu for April 24th, 2013 will be:

Your choice of Roast Beef, Sloppy Joes, or BBQ Pulled Chicken

Baked Potatoes

Green Bean Casserole

Dinner Rolls or Biscuits

English Trifle (a layered dessert with homemade pound cake, mixed berries, pudding and whipped cream)

Calvary Carrot Cake Recipe

Who doesn’t love a great carrot cake with cream cheese frosting?  We made this for dinner last week and had lots of requests for the recipe, so here you go.  We made 600 pieces of cake (using 15 cake pans, 12x2x20 inch size), but I pared down the recipe to just one cake with 20 servings if you want to make this at home.  The large quantity recipe is below.  This recipe is definitely the best way I know of to eat your carrots!

Calvary Carrot Cake:  Makes 1 9×13 cake, cut 4×5 for 20 servings

1 1/3 cups flour

1 1/4 tsp baking powder

1 tsp baking soda

1/2 tsp salt

1 1/2 tsp cinnamon

3 eggs

1 1/3 cups sugar

1 cup vegetable oil

1 1/3 cups grated carrots

½ cup crushed pineapple, drained

Sift together dry ingredients, set aside.

Beat eggs, add the sugar and oil, and beat until combined.

Stir in the flour mixture.  Fold in carrots and pineapple.  Mix well.  Turn into greased pans (flour pan if you want to remove from the pan before frosting).  Bake at 325* for 45 minutes.

Cream cheese frosting

4 oz butter, softened

8 oz cream cheese, softened

2 tsp vanilla

1 pound powdered sugar

Beat together butter, cream cheese and vanilla until smooth.  Add sugar gradually, beating until well mixed.

Recipe for 600 servings of Calvary Carrot Cake:

Make the recipe (5) times for 600 servings in 15 pans, 12x20x2 inch, cut each cake 5 x 8 into 40 pieces.

This recipe makes (3) 20 x 12 x 2 inch cakes.

8 cups flour

8 tsp baking powder

2 Tbsp baking soda

4 tsp salt

8 tsp cinnamon

16 eggs

8 cups sugar

6 cups vegetable oil

8 cups grated carrots

3 cups crushed pineapple, drained (for 4x recipe, use 2 #10 cans)

Sift together dry ingredients. Beat eggs in large mixer, add the sugar and oil and beat until combined.  Stir in flour mixture.  Fold in carrots and pineapple.  Mix well.  Turn into greased  pans.  Bake at 325* for 45 minutes.

Cream cheese frosting, For 15 cakes:

7 1/2# butter softened

15# cream cheese softened

10 Tbsp vanilla

26 1/4# powdered sugar

Beat together butter, cream cheese and vanilla until smooth.  Add sugar gradually, beating until well mixed.

Super Kid Friendly Supper

Church was so awesome tonight!  Hot dogs!  Jello!  Macaroni and cheese!  Ice cream with sprinkles and chocolate and caramel and bananas!

At the 6:30 worship service, 38 third graders received their Bibles, as Pastor Dwight led us in a chorus of “The B-I-B-L-E, yes that’s the book for me”. Thank you third graders for joining us with your families as our special guests at dinner tonight before worship. Blessings to you all as you begin to use and enjoy your new Bibles.
